EXCLUSIVE: Mike Greene, best known as the ‘Secret Millionaire’, is the Brexit Party candidate in the upcoming Peterborough by-election.
The TV personality, author and businessman was brought up in the cathedral city and hopes his rags to riches story will propel him into Parliament as the first Brexit Party MP. “I’m passionate about Peterborough, I love my home town and I’m excited about this new challenge and opportunity,” he said. “Brexit is a cause close to my heart, it’s all about democracy. The people of Peterborough and across the country have been badly let down by Theresa May and the Conservative Party.”
A win for him in the currently Labour-held seat would send shock waves through the political establishment.
The by-election – set to take place on June 6th – was called after more than 19,000 constituents voted in the recall petition to force Fiona Onasanya out.
The MP had refused to resign after being found guilty of lying to the police and obstructing justice in the aftermath of a speeding ticket.
Self-made millionaire Greene was brought up by a single mother after his father abandoned the family when he was four.
He first started work as a paperboy at the age of seven before establishing his own business in his early twenties.
Although that crashed and he and his wife Julia faced a tough time, he was undeterred and forged a second successful career in the retail trade.
In 2011, he took part in the Channel 4 programme Secret Millionaire, returning to the council estate in Bretton where he spent his childhood, before volunteering at the local New Ark Adventure Playground and the ‘Time Stop’ YMCA hostel.
The father-of-two currently lives in an historic manor house in a village on the outskirts of the city.
